We R Only Human is a Long Island nonprofit creating immersive empathy education for caregivers, healthcare workers, families and communities supporting people with developmental disabilities, older adults, and people experiencing mental health challenges. We believe dignity begins when we look beyond labels, behaviors, and first impressions—and recognize the human being in front of us.
We cannot step fully into someone else's lived experience. But we can listen more closely, challenge our assumptions, and learn to respond with greater patience, respect, and care. That's why we create experiences that invite people to see from another perspective.

Founded by Stacey Reeve, RN, BSN—a nurse, educator, and parent—We R Only Human grew from a simple but urgent belief: there has to be a better way to understand one another.
A person trying to communicate may be misunderstood. A caregiver can be doing everything they know how to do and still feel alone. A family can spend years hoping someone will truly listen. We want to help change those moments—not with pity, but with empathy that shows up in everyday actions.
Before we judge the behavior, let's try to understand the person.
A grocery trip might seem ordinary—until the lights, sounds, expectations, or pace become too much. What looks like a difficult moment may actually be someone asking, in the only way they can, for a little understanding.
In Hold My Basket™, participants move through five live, in-store learning stations that open conversations about sensory differences, communication, and the assumptions we make in everyday places.

Escape Your Apathy™ is a portable, RN-led immersive training experience that invites care teams and community groups to pause, question assumptions, and consider the human impact of their responses. Through hands-on situations and guided reflection, participants explore how small changes in understanding can change an everyday interaction.
